New product: KÖSTER Sewer and Shaft Mortar - [2010-06-03]For restoration works under difficult conditions like in sewers and shafts KÖSTER BAUCHEMIE AG has developed the KÖSTER Sewer and Shaft Mortar. The material has been designed to meet the very specific requirements of such surroundings. Apart from its high compressive strength, the material provides a good chemical resistance and a short curing time even under very humid conditions. As old sewers and shafts are oftentimes in a very bad condition the applicable layer thickness of a material is very important. The minimum layer thickness of KÖSTER Sewer and Shaft Mortar in order to reach a watertight coat is 4mm while the material can be applied in layers up to 3 cm.
The KÖSTER Oil Removal System - [2009-12-07]KÖSTER OIL REMOVAL SYSTEM (ORS) Due to various activities, industrial floors for example in shipyards, workshops or the oil industry can be contaminated with oil/ fat. KÖSTER has developed a unique oil-removal and containment treatment process to rehabilitate concrete surfaces making them suitable to receive any type of flooring system. The KÖSTER Oil Removal System (ORS) consists of two components: The KÖSTER ORS-D has the ability to penetrate deep into the concrete surface to extract oil and/or hydrocarbon based compounds leaving a clean surface for the ORS-C coating. Both products combine to provide a dry, uncontaminated surface which is fit to receive flooring/coating systems. This system has already proven its effectiveness in numerous projects in the USA and Europe: ORS installation report: Training facility (USA) [Download] Project completion: Protective coating of cooling towers in Harbin, China - [2009-10-21]China’s rapid economic growth has increased the need for electricity many fold over the past decade. The economic growth has also increased the awareness of environmental issues and pollution. In the energy sector, this has caused the trend of changing from traditional smoke stacks to cooling towers through which the flue gas is led. These cooling towers use a different principle whereby the dry flue gas is led through a lime-water bath. The treated flue gas has a pH value of approx. 3 which will attack the concrete of the cooling tower if left unprotected. The Harbin power plant is a joint venture between Datang Power Corporation and Harbin Power Company.
The total surface area of the two cooling towers to be protected was 110,000 m². The remote location and shape of the cooling towers made installation difficult.
KÖSTER NB 1 Grey and KÖSTER Polysil® TG 500 were selected to coat and protect the cooling towers internal side and KÖSTER NB 1 Grey was selected for the external side. For the final paint of the towers SOVACRYL was utilized. Apart from its weatherproofness this paint is open to water vapor diffusion and slows down carbon dioxide penetration. The main reasons why KÖSTER NB 1 Grey was chosen are the characteristics of the product: KÖSTER NB 1 Grey penetrates into the substrate and waterproofs it while still being open to vapour diffusion. Thus, the coating keeps the water out while it does not trap the vapour under the coating. Together these characteristics promote bonding and prevent delamination of the coating. Also, KÖSTER NB 1 Grey is completely UV-resistant and the acid resistance of the proposed system is sufficient to withstand the stresses which are to be expected. Another reason for selecting KÖSTER NB 1 Grey was the ease of application and the fact that it could be both sprayed and brush applied. It was also considered a great advantage that it can be applied on a wet substrate which would make surface cleaning and weather considerations much easier to handle. In the end, it was decided to hand apply KÖSTER NB 1 Grey and KÖSTER Polysil® TG 500 because the applicator was unable to get licenses to use the heavy spraying equipment up on the towers. The solution was to use a team of highly skilled and experienced specialists in abseiling – all with statutory licences - to brush apply KÖSTER NB 1 Grey and to spray apply KÖSTER Polysil® TG 500 using ordinary hand carried liquid sprayers. Although the team was experienced, the strong winds made installation difficult; many procedures had to be revised to avoid compromising safety and quality. Another important factor was the fact that Harbin is located in the Northeast of China. It is known to be one of the coldest cities in the World and damages to structures caused by frost are common. With KÖSTER NB 1 Grey, the track record for the past 25 years is unblemished and countless structures have been protected against water and frost damage over the years.
While many cooling towers are planned or under construction, this is only the third cooling tower project in China and we are proud to announce that our affiliate Beijing KÖSTER International Chemistry Co., Ltd has finished this project successfully. Nowadays flooring contractors are more and more urged to work with so called "green products", meaning e. g. solvent free, water based or VOC free materials.

We are very proud to announce that on the 27th of May 2011 DEUTSCHE BAUCHEMIE e.V. (association of German construction chemical companies) has elected Johann J. Köster, founder and Managing Director of KÖSTER BAUCHEMIE AG, as chairman of their executive board.

1. Before the application of KÖSTER ORS the surface is to be prepared thoroughly. The substrate must be sound and absorptive and should furthermore be free of Alkaline Silica Reactive or sulphurous compounds. Any type of surface contamination such as adhesives, adhesive residue, old coatings, curing compounds and underlayments must be removed completely by shot blasting prior to the ORS treatment being applied.
2. Subsequently to the surface preparation the substrate is cleaned from its oil contamination. KÖSTER ORS-D foam is laid down in a “carpet” onto the concrete. A spread rate of about 0.1 – 0.2 liters per square meter is required for the ORS-D (based on a total two coat application). A wait of about 1 hour allows its ingredients to penetrate the capillary system of the concrete cap and float the contained oil to the surface. After the waiting time, spinning operations begin. This phase uses hot water and a deck spinner washer to clean the surface from the oil that has been washed out and the remaining foam. After the rinse a squeegee and a vacuum is used to remove all standing water from the area to be coated. Depending on the level of contamination more KÖSTER ORS-D treatments can be necessary.
3. The KÖSTER ORS-C primer is now applied onto the cleaned but still moist concrete. It has a very low viscosity and can therefore be applied with a roller. A spread rate of about 0.4 liters per square meter is required for the KÖSTER ORS-C. After a curing time of about 15-20 minutes silica sand is broadcasted into the still wet coating. A spread rate of 0.5 kg of sand (mesh size 0.3-0.7 mm) per square meter is required. The sand is important for the adhesion properties regarding the subsequent coatings. After a minimum curing time of 12 hours (depending on the temperatures) the remaining sand can be swept up.
4. After the completion of this process the cleaned and primed concrete is ready to receive a top coating. KÖSTER Self-Levelling Floor 15 is a single-component levelling that is applied in a layer thickness of 2-8mm. It can be walked on after only 3 hours of curing time and it is abrasion and wear resistant. KÖSTER Self-Levelling Floor 15 is used for levelling out mineral substrates inside and outside, underneath tiles, ceramic coverings, screeds - also for wet rooms, balconies and terraces. KÖSTER Self-Levelling Floor 15 is not a decorative final coating.
